What we carry, and how to choose between categories
Upstate Canna Co. stocks seven cannabis categories, all grown and made in New York: flower, pre-rolls, vapes, edibles, concentrates, tinctures and topicals, plus accessories. This guide explains how each works so you can pick with confidence, then shop live stock.
Flower
The dried, cured cannabis bud you grind and smoke or vaporize. It is the most flexible category and usually the best value per milligram of THC. Jars list strain name, type, THC and terpene percentages from the lab report, which tell you more than the indica or sativa label alone. Start with an eighth if you are trying something new.
Timing: Onset within minutes when inhaled. Effects typically last one to three hours.
Flower that is already ground and rolled. Singles are good for sampling a strain; multi-packs of smaller joints suit people who want a few sessions without committing to a full eighth. Infused pre-rolls add concentrate or kief and are considerably stronger, so treat them as their own category.
Timing: Same fast onset as flower. Infused versions hit harder and last longer.
Cartridges and pods attach to a battery; disposables have the battery built in. Vapes are discreet, produce little odor, and let you take small, measured puffs. Look at the oil type: distillate is consistent and affordable, while live resin and rosin carts preserve more of the plant’s original flavor.
Timing: Onset within minutes. Easy to go slow with one or two puffs at a time.
Gummies, chocolates and drinks. The cannabis is digested and processed by the liver, which changes how it feels and extends the timeline. New York caps adult-use edibles at 10mg THC per serving. First-timers should start with a single serving or less and wait at least two hours before taking more.
Timing: Onset in 30 minutes to 2 hours. Effects can last 4 to 8 hours.
Live resin, badder, rosin and other extracts that isolate the plant’s cannabinoids and terpenes. They are potent and generally used with a dab rig or a concentrate-compatible vaporizer. New York limits purchases to 24 grams of concentrate per transaction.
Timing: Very fast onset and high potency. Best for experienced consumers.
Cannabis oil in a dropper bottle, taken under the tongue or added to food or drink. Tinctures let you measure a dose precisely in small increments. Held under the tongue, some absorption happens faster than a swallowed edible; mixed into food, the timeline looks more like an edible.
Timing: Onset roughly 15 to 60 minutes depending on how it is taken.
Balms, lotions and salves applied to the skin. They are used for localized comfort and do not produce the intoxicating effects of inhaled or eaten cannabis. We cannot make medical claims about them, but our team can explain how different formulations are designed.
Timing: Applied where needed. Not intended to produce a high.
